No Student Left Behind: Building 6-Star Physicians

Student Mentoring Program

The school implements the Student Mentoring Program (SMP) which is a structured support program to help students overcome initial psychological or scholastic difficulties, cope with the stressful nature of medical training like dealing with and assimilating vast amounts of scientific content; and guide them in achieving their highest potentials. It is aimed at strengthening student engagement in relationship building with both faculty and peer mentors.

Objectives

  • Guide every medical student toward becoming a 5-Star Physician:

    • Care Provider – delivering quality and compassionate healthcare.

    • Decision Maker – making sound clinical and ethical judgments.

    • Communicator – effectively engaging with patients, families, and communities.

    • Community Leader – serving as advocates for health and wellness in society.

    • Manager – applying leadership and resource management in practice.

  • Ensure 100% readiness for the Philippine Physician Licensure Examination through continuous support, coaching, and performance monitoring.

  • Instill resilience, integrity, and service-oriented values among all students.

Structure

  1. Mentor Team

    • Faculty physicians and clinical preceptors from partner hospitals.

    • Each mentor is trained to guide students not only academically but also in character formation.

  2. Mentee Pods

    • Small groups of 5–6 students to ensure personal attention.

    • Peer support system within each pod to reinforce the “no one left behind” commitment.

  3. Phases of Mentorship

    • Foundation (Year 1–2): Academic mastery, study techniques, NMAT/transition support.

    • Clinical Immersion (Year 3–4): Mentored hospital rotations, community medicine, patient interaction.

    • Board Exam Prep (Year 4): Comprehensive coaching, mock exams, one-on-one remediation for at-risk students.

Activities

  • Mentoring Circles: Monthly sessions covering academics, ethics, and personal growth.

  • Skills & Simulation Coaching: Mentors guide students in hospital and clinic simulation laboratories.

  • Board Exam Bootcamps: Quarterly mock board exams with mentor-led reviews and remediation.

  • Community Engagement: Mentor–mentee teams participate in barangay health programs, linking theory with practice.

  • Peer Tutoring System: Senior students mentor juniors, reinforcing knowledge and creating a culture of shared success.

Guiding Philosophy

  • “No Student Left Behind” – every student receives personalized support until they achieve competency.

  • Success Together – fostering a culture where one student’s success inspires the entire batch.

  • Excellence with Compassion – upholding the vision of APCSOM as the pioneer in forming physicians who will transform healthcare in Western Mindanao.
